Motorsports athletes, whether drivers in cars or riders on motorcycles, are athletes in every meaningful sense. Strength & Conditioning isn't option; it supports performance, injury resilience, and long-term health. Motorsport athletes experience: - High Heart Rates & Cardiovascular strain during competition. Drivers have been shown to maintain elevated heart rates, with significant thermoregulatory and cardiovascular stress throughout races. - Muscular Demands in Key Regions-- neck, core, shoulders, grip and forearms, particularly due to g-forces, steering/braking forces, vibration, and sustained postural stress. For motorcycle riders in particular, research shows: - Strength and endurance are critical-- elite riders demonstrate higher anaerobic power and physical capacity compared with less-trained peers. - Muscle fatigue (e.g., forearm "arm pump") directly impacts lap times and control, and conditioning programs can delay fatigue onset and improve endurance. Motorcycle Riding is Physically Demanding MotoGP and motocross riders undertake rigorous off-bike training, not just riding, because: - They need strength for balance, bike control, and absorbing bumps - Strength/endurance in core, legs, and grips allows better handling and faster races - Studies demonstrate physical training improves competition results, not just fitness numbers but actual placement and performance. Common Issues Riders Encounter: 1. Arm Pump / Forearm Fatigue 2. Low back & neck fatigue from posture and suspension forces 3. Leg fatigue 4. Grip fatigue from prolonged handlebar force Strength & Conditioning Programs designed for riders enhance: - Muscular endurance - Grip & forearm strength - Core & hip stability - Overal efficiency on bike - All of which DELAY FATIGUE and make long races or rough terrain easier to handle 2WRGRL was developed to empower riders/drivers to stay healthy longer, ride harder, and compete at their best for as many years as possible. We can't stop crashes from happening, but through targeted strength and conditioning, we minimize the tool on your body, reduce injury severity, and support faster recovery so you can stay in the sport you love, whether that's riding for fun or racing at a high level.
Angela is a sports performance coach with over 12 years of experience working with athletes at every level, from youth development to collegiate and professional sports. Today, she specializes in performance training for motorsports athletes, helping riders and drivers build the strength, resilience, and conditioning needed to compete at a high level for the long haul. Beyond coaching, Angela lives the sport. She's a lifelong motorcycle enthusiast starting out on a minibike with a brake lever that rarely provided much deceleration control. In 2020, COVID happened, an unfortunate time for all of us. I had just purchased a 2012 Ducati Multistrada 1200s sport touring bike the previous year. My brother and I talked and decided to take a cross-country trip together. I bought the bike for that very reason and although he had already taken several trips in previous years without me, we couldn't think of a better thing to do at the time. Once we blew through the midwest, I was already kicking myself for not having done this sooner! Since then, I've traveled by motorcycle to almost every state in the United States as well as most recently, Italy and Switzerland. Each trip is always better than the last. With all that said, health and strength plays a key role in motorcycle travel, especially as you get older. It's great to be confident not just with the bike but also with yourself. Every trip I take, I always find a way to get a few workouts in, whether the hotel provides a fitness center, or I'm just able to get up and get a body weight workout in. Some mornings there may be something hindering me and it's nice to be able to get up and work that issue out before hopping on the bike for the day.
